Saudi Arabia draw with Iraq to book 2026 World Cup spot

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia drew 0-0 with Iraq in the fourth round of Asian qualifying Group B game, played in Jeddah, on Tuesday to book a ticket to next year’s World Cup finals.

It will be a third straight trip to the finals for the Saudis, who have played in six previous editions.

The Green Falcons joined Qatar at the World Cup after the conclusion of the Asian fourth round qualifiers that featured six teams, including Oman.

The six teams were divided into two groups and battled for two direct berths at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Group B runner-up Iraq will meet Group A second-placed UAE, who lost to Qatar 2-1 in Group A game earlier on Tuesday, in a November playoff with the winner proceeding to play in an inter-continental playoff for a spot in the World Cup.

Oman ended third in Group A with a point from a draw against Qatar while Indonesia lost both their games to Saudis and Iraq to finish at the bottom of group.

Saudi Arabia, which will stage the 2034 World Cup, will appear for a seventh time at the continental showpiece.
